GRAND CANYON STAR PARTY [YAVAPAI POINT] JUNE, 2005
Solar Observing

One afternoon I played hooky from dinner and took two of my 'scopes out to the rim. I found Dennis, Chuck and Paul had already beaten me to the punch. I ended up staying 'till the sun was nearly down. It was something I had always heard other people were doing but had never done myself. It was a great way to introduce our efforts to the public. Many of the visitors were from France, Germany and Japan. And many of them, I found out later in the night session had returned to look...

As you can see here, everybody is gathered around Dennis and his 'scope.
My little 'scope, complete with full-aperture solar mask is aimed at the sun.
Two huge sunspots were visible with many other smaller ones clearly in sight.
Hey everybody, we're talking millions of miles away - not just a mere dozen!

Paul showing off the wonders of the Canyons "bottom-land" miles below the rim.

On second thought, it's obvious why nobody wanted to look through my 'scope!

Well golly, will you look at that. There's a bridge way down there!
